Choosing a Greenville Venue, Honestly
SoundChoice DJ · · 6 min read
Four kinds of room, one guest count, and the two questions that eliminate most of a venue list before you tour anything.
Every venue list you can find online is the same forty names in a different order, and it does not help, because the list is not your problem. Your problem is that you have a guest count, a season and a budget, and most of those forty names are already eliminated by one of the three.
Two questions that cut the list in half
How many people, really. Not the invite list, the number who will come. A room sized for 200 with 120 people in it feels empty no matter what anybody does, and a room sized for 120 with 160 in it has no dance floor by nine.
Indoors, outdoors, or both by necessity. Outdoors there is nothing to reflect sound back, so every decibel the back row hears has to be sent there on purpose, and a rained out ceremony needs a real indoor plan and not a corridor.

Four kinds of Greenville room
- Hotel ballrooms. Carpet, drapes, low ceiling. Controlled at any volume, and visually flat, so the money goes to lighting rather than sound.
- Gallery and industrial spaces. Concrete and glass. Sound arrives twice, so the fix is aim and restraint. Bar and floor tend to sit close together, which helps at nine.
- Historic houses. Guests split across two or three rooms, and somebody is always one doorway from the music. Placement problem, not a volume one.
- Acreage. Long walks from parking, guests arriving in waves, and an opening set that has to climb rather than peak.

A room you love in photographs at 2pm is a different room at 9:40 with 140 people in it. Tour it, then ask what it does when it is full.
Then check the list
We keep every venue we have worked in a searchable database, 344 of them across 128 Upstate cities. Search a name in the header and it will tell you whether we have been in that room.
